Fresh Music Fridays: Frank Ocean

Named one of TIME Magazine’s “Top 10 Albums” of 2011 and Rolling Stone’s
“Top 50 Albums” of 2011, Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra is definitely the
odd ball of those groups. But, that is Frank Ocean. The 24 year old R&B
singer released his debut mixtape on his Tumblr page…for FREE! A member
of the very eccentric and appropriately named group, Odd Future, he brings
a new sound and feel to hip hop. Old school influences and samples from diverse genres can be heard throughout the album. With hard hitting lyrics laid over smooth beats with electronic influences, he has his own style and sound.

Frank Ocean has a new provocative sound that is being noticed by heavy
weights in the music industry. He was featured on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s
collaboration album, Watch the Throne and is seeing increasing mainstream airtime. This week Coachella released their highly anticipated 2012 line-up and Ocean was named as a Friday night performer. He will perform over both April weekends with 80+ other artists and bands. Frank Ocean is definitely “swimming good” into 2012. I encourage you to listen to this artist. If you want to slowly dive in start with singles “Novocane” and my personal
favorite, “Swim Good.”

Happy Friday!
