Fresh Music Fridays: The Weeknd

With electronic and hip hop influences The Weeknd is emerging from the underground scene, appealing to more and more main stream listeners. The Weeknd released his 2011 free mixtape, House of Balloons in March with great support from fellow Canadian rapper, Drake. House of Balloons was the first of a 3-part album trilogy and the most recent installment, Echoes of Silence is making waves. He was named one of Rolling Stone’s “Artists to Watch” in 2011 and continues to live up to the hype.

He has recently been announced as a Sunday performer for the 2012 Coachella Music Festival. The Weeknd is not only a sought after artist, but producer. Florence + the Machine enlisted him to remix their hit “Shake It Up.” I feel 2012 will be the year that he finally garners the following and mainstream attention he deserves. Hip hop sound and an infectious, addicting tone are why The Weeknd is this Friday’s Fresh Music Artist.
